What is Birth Photography?

Birth photography captures the pure, raw, genuine moments and emotions of your labor and birth. It's actually hard to put into words what all is captured in the hours leading up to the arrival of your little one.  Welcoming your baby into the world is going to be one of the biggest events in your life that you will cherish forever. During the hours of labor, there are so many things going on that pass you by. Whether it be family patiently waiting outside your room, friends facetiming to check on you, your significant other comforting you with a wash cloth on your forehead, nurses helping to ease your pain, or telling funny stories to pass time, all of these moments are important. Having a photographer there to capture these special moments will instantly take you back to this day to remind you of how amazing it was. Birth stories are all so different and unique in their own way. Whether you are having a c-section, home birth, hospital birth, or end up delivering your own birth in the car on the way to the hospital, I want to tell your story! You won't get these moments back, and they will go by so fast. I want to put these memories in an album for you to hold onto forever and eventually show your kids their own birth story.

How does it work?

I will be ready to go and awaiting your text or call in the time frame around your due date. In your last few doctors appointments, update me. Send me a text, no matter if you think its TMI, think of me as  friend! It is good for me to know how things are progressing so I can be ready if thin happen fast. Once I arrive to the birth location I would check in and come straight to you. I won't be in the way of doctors or your personal space. Your adrenaline will be so high and there will be so many emotions, you will most likely forget I am there. Once baby is born, I will stay 1-2 hours after birth to capture some of the details of weight and measurements, feedings, skin on skin contact, and the excitement of welcoming your newborn baby.

What are Fresh 48 sessions?

Fresh 48 sessions are another way to document the first hours of life with your baby, but are a little less time sensitive than the actual birth. If you are hesitant about the actual birth being photographed, the fresh 48 may interest you. These session are done within the first 48 hours of birth whether it been in the hospital or in your home/nursery. These are lifestyle sessions, which means it's completely natural with minimal posing. This is a good time frame after birth to capture snuggling, breastfeeding, introducing your kids to their new baby brother or sister, and soaking up all the love surrounding you. You can be yourself and just enjoy the presence of your newborn with me there to capture all the love and emotions. I absolutely love documenting real moments. FAQ

Is it weird to have a photographer in the room while giving birth?

It may feel a little odd at first, but keep in mind there will be a lot of nurses/doctors you may not know coming in and out of your room. I am no different from them in terms of relation to you. I will be respectful of those surrounding me and will stay out of the way.

What if I have to have a c-section?

If you are having a planned c-section, sometimes having a photographer in the OR is allowed, and we can plan for this accordingly. Ultimately it is your responsibility to assure a photographer is granted permission.

If you are rushed in for an emergency c-section, we would have to see how things go. If I'm given permission, I will scrub in and be right there with you (if is sounds like I've watched too much Grey's Anatomy, you'd be right). Every hospital is different and have their own policies. It will ultimately be up to the doctors to decide. If this happens, and I am restricted from photographing the delivery, don't worry, I will be as close as I am physically allowed. I will photograph other special moments in the meantime, such as family in the waiting room and your support person announcing the arrival!

The well being of you and your baby are priority. If for any reason there is an emergency, the most important thing is the safety of you and your baby. These photographs are important, but if under the circumstances I am unable to continue my job, I will be close by to resume when allowed. Ultimately the doctors have the final say to insure you are taken care of.

What if I go into labor at 3a.m.? Will you be there?

Absolutely! I ask that you keep me updated as much as possible. I like to arrive once you've been admitted and are in confirmed labor. Usually being 5-6 cm dilated is a good time for me to arrive. Giving birth is very unpredictable, so it is important to keep me informed on the details so I can be ready to go! I will have my gear all ready to go and will await your call!
